Ready to upgrade to 4.0 Has anybody tried installing 4 under SBSR2? SQL 2005 Workgroup already running versus loading SQL Express on the server? I really don't want to put 2 SQL on the server

Well, while with the correct connection strings and other variables, I suppose you could run SQL Server 2005 as the only SQL Server and run AC. But, I don't see the advantage.

When SQL Server 2005 installed under default installation, it became the default instance. When AC installed (like most third party programs), it didn't really bother to look for an available SQL Server and simply installed itself as a named instance, in this case "Amazing Charts." You can still configure it with SQL Configuration Manager.

Amazing Charts runs just find under SQL Express and trying to not use it would seem like looking for trouble to me. The Amazing Utilities allows one to detach the databases from the SQL Server, and I am not sure this would work with any other method. Besides, I am not sure that Guardian Angel would support any other configuration.

In the end, though I am no SQL expert, it just seems easiest to install it using SQL Express.

I was worried that running 2 different instances of SQL under SBS might be a problem plus it just sounded cleaner to me. I'm kind of fanatical about keeping the server as "pristine" as possible, however if you would have to reconnect the strings tha's WAY too much work for me. Will let u know if I hit any snags running both. thanks.

I know what you mean about keeping things clean on the server and I am by no means a SQL expert, but it really is no big deal. I would simply let Amazing Charts have its instance. It runs fine that way. Others may tell you differently.

Just a thought. No one ever takes me up on it though. Or, if they do, they never tell me. I will say, though, that if I have a computer issue that has stumped me, they will always fix it. If you want other reasons why Experts Exchange is the best site for computer (well I shouldn't just say computer) they have home theater, cell phones, even questions on philosophy or math. Ask the origin of the Pythagorean theorem, and you will get an answer in 15 minutes.

Wow, Bert now e know the secret for all your answers. I agree expert exchange is the awesome resource, but then you need to phrase the questions right. I dont think many of them are so tech savvy to even phrase the questions.

anyway, regarding candlecj's question, you can use the instance of SBSr2 instance, but it is asking for trouble. I have not tried it but if you can make it work with regular instance of sql, one should be able to work with the default instance. But as Bert says dont mess around.

Also having multiple instances of sql on server is expected design. R2 is being designed in that fashion and sql express is being promoted that way, so that every applications controls it destiny and will not screw up some other programs db's.

We're running on SBS 2008 Premium and it does fine. Keep AC on the 2nd server included with premium. On install, AC picked that I had an SQL 2005 available and didn't mess around with installing SQL express.

Welll My install was a no go. AC installed on the server as a native client of sql 2005 under SBS converted databases running fine BUT when I installed on client computers sql client install failed. It installed the components O.K but got a fail message after AC configured. Running win 2K and win pro on clients and it failed on both. It acts like a port problem to me. Looking at the tutorial I never saw any screen showing me to to configure firewall sql port etc. when I installed on the server Any ideas? By the way thanks Bert for the link.

Are you saying again that you are trying to install AC on the server without using SQL Express?

No My 2005 SBS did the same thing as what Kevin posted it installed under native SQL 2005 for workgroups At least I assume so since the only new program AC installed on the server is SQL server native client. In other words I show no sql express in my program list

That is correct, you will not see any SQL Express listed in Add/Remove Programs as it installs as an instance of SQL Server 2005.

The first thing I would suggest would be to go into services (use the Run window and type services.smc) and insure you have ten services running for SQL. You should have the basic three, MSSQL Services under M of course, and then you should have seven services listed under SQL Service which will include AmazingCharts. All of these should be present and ALL should be running. If not, turn them on and see what happens. If they are not all there, then your install is off.

Also, make sure you download every last download that Microsoft says you are missing.

Will try that makes sense if a service isn't running the clients won't configure Will have to wait a bit with 4 providers finding time to work on this is challenging. Will let u know

The main problem was I read the install warnings - Ignore the sql client fail message even though the install says this just happens with Vista also when u install AC 4 on clients on xppro or win2k- also after ac 4 itself installs it looks for the ac xml file which I took as the batch file when installing on the main server pointing AC to convert and configure the database versus just looking for the main database on the clients both are named the same - On a darker note I just got a random audit back from Kansas Medicaid which denied every encounter I had for the past 6 months because AC was not up to their EMR standard - around 4500 they say I have to pay back 1 reason among others no time date stamp on my E sig doesn't matter if progress note, script, or sign off on message or import item ac4 will stamp on notes but not scripts or messages that I know of - It's coming boys - Costa Rica cash clinic is looking good

I recently upgraded to V4. I have SBS2003R2, and the first installation attempt was unsuccessful on the server. I had to uninstall both AC and SQL2005 then reinstall them and it went just fine.

Regarding the clients, you are supposed to get an error message that SQLExpress didn't install correctly. It's a glitch but it's supposed to happen. Watch the instructional videos on the installation, and join tells you that the error message is going to pop up. He says to the effect "trust us, the installation went just fine."

This "error" happened on every client machine in my office, but they all totally connect to the server and they all write to the AC database without any issues.

As you noted, everything is working just fine now. That's awesome!

You will fall in love w/ V4. The speed is ridiculously faster!
