I need to purchase a backup laptop for our office. It will only be used if a provider is having an issue with their regular laptop (so I can troubleshoot problems during regular hours without them having to resort to keeping paper notes). Because it will be used as a backup, I really only need it to access AC (on our server) and the internet, and I'd like to not have to spend thousands of $$ on it. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Get Lenovo x220 off Ebay.
They are built like tanks, and don't cost much.
Or if you want a little fancier for a few more $$, gent Lenovo x-1 carbon, 1st generation.

Dear AnnMarie,

If your providers all use the same model, just get the same model as a spare, either new or used on eBay.

If your providers have several different laptops . . .

You might pick the one that seems to be best-liked and see if you can buy it new (or used on eBay).

Having the same model simplifies setup and troubleshooting, gives you a spare charger, and means that at least one provider will have a familiar laptop in case of failure.

The more providers you can get to use the same model, the easier things will be, but convincing them to standardize is about as hard as herding cats.

I just tallied laptops at my two worst offices.

One office has 30 laptops at two sites with 8 providers, split among 7 different models.

The other office has only 2 providers, but has 9 laptops split among 5 models. I suspect that a few are stashed in drawers and forgotten.

Both offices spend a lot of time and money trying to make their motley hardware work.

Since laptops aren't fixed in place like desktops, offices can even lose track of them. I had one office that didn't notice that two of laptops had been stolen until I asked why they had been inactive on my LogMeIn account for so long.

Before buying a spare, check if there's a forgotten laptop already floating around your office, or if one of your providers has a laptop that's perfectly good, but no longer used, or just needs a new battery.

If only access to server is needed, using remote desktop, I am using used thin clients usually $20-30 from ebay. No hard drives, virus issues or updates needed on these.
My rooms are wired.

Many thanks for all the suggestions! I was pulled off onto another project but will be coming back to this one so I can purchase before the end of the year.

Hi Anne-Marie,

It is always helpful to know your current setup. Do you have nine client computers or thirty. With thirty, I could see the chance of this coming up more frequently. And, I know this isn't answering your question. The others have given great advice.

I suppose it would be helpful to know how often this happens and why. We have used the same Lenovos for eight years, and they are still working fine. As Carl alludes to, they were all bought at the same time with the same specs.

But, is using paper and then fixing it huge problem?

But, after saying that, I do know I have had at least one situation, where a computer went down, and I literally had to swap computers and not use a workstation that was rarely used. I fixed it, but it was about three days, and it got confusing. But, overall, most have been fixed during that day, by me, while I was seeing patients.

It is a good idea though. And, I know what it's like to continue to be pulled in a different direction.
