Review of CPT Coding Changes for 2021

Effective January 1, 2021, CMS proposes to adopt CPT editorial panel recommended  revisions to office and other outpatient evaluation and management services (E/M) for the first time in 25 years. According to an article released by Medical Economics, “the foundational changes are aimed at making E/M office visit coding and documentation simpler and more flexible. This move should free physicians and their teams from administrative burden which has led to time-wasting note bloat and box checking.” These changes are being enacted to:

  • Decrease administrative burden – remove scoring by History and Examination
  • Decrease the need for audits
  • Decrease unnecessary documentation in the medical record not relevant for patient care
  • Commit to changing coding requirements to simplify the work of the health care provider and improve patient health
